The Third Treasure
What has happened?
I remember the candles of strange hues and comforting warmth surrounding me, the broken beam of the structure damaged by the shaking and the note, which I still clutched in my hand. The room was filled with a bright light coming from another candle, leaving me staring at three candles, all with slightly different hues and intensity. The new candle sparkled as the flame continued to rise and fall in flashes of light. The light reminded me of something, unsure of the context of which I had seen this variation of grey. Searching my memories for a moment, I had no recollection of any such hue in my past, only memories of my cell and slow shifting variations of darkness.
I peer over to the structure, still damaged and letting in the ray of light, although the brightness was muted by the brightness of the third candle, filling most of the cavern with light. There were a few crevasses that the light now revealed more about the rocks around me. In scanning the nearest rock to my chambers my interest peaked at the shape of the rock. I placed my note next to the candles and got up, and walked towards the closest rock. I reached by hand out and touched the surface of the stone. The cold and rough, yet soft structure intrigued me. It almost seemed more like mud that had been plastered carefully to conceal something. I began to scratch the surface and a small piece gave way. I had never dreamed or noticed the consistency of this rock-like surface before, but the brightness of this third treasure gave me clarity of sight. The excitement and anticipation grew and I desired greatly to uncover this plastered earth.
I went to work over the next few hours of searching my cell for a tool to help me chip away at the fortified mud, failing to have strength to move the bars. So, I then study the chains attached to the wall seeing that they are bolted into wood. I look back at the candle, my newest treasure, and begin studying the flashes. It seems stronger than the other candles and may produce enough heat to burn through the wood. Then I could use the clasp of the cuffs to scratch away to unveil another treasure.
I jump up out of the cell and run towards the candle. Suddenly my body stops, I stand there looking at the candles and before I can reach out and pick up my newest addition my heart sinks. “I have not touched these candles. I don’t know how they are here, who brought them, and why they are constantly lit. If I move them will I get hurt? They seem harmless but I am the only person or thing that has ever entered the cell. I have been sleeping next to these treasures but what if I wake up one morning and they are all gone? I will be left with only my cell. If I use the candle to destroy my cell I will be left in utter darkness in a cavern that I thought I knew completely. But the newest candle had revealed the true nature of parts of the cavern, and I cannot stand the idea of losing these lights and being in a cell I don’t recognize.”
The third treasure that greeted me was: The light of truth.
This light delights me, yet leaves me feeling uncomfortable. I sit down on my self-made bed next to the three candles and move my eyes back and forth between the cell, the rock, and the candles. Uncertainty floods my heart and mind and my eyes fall to the floor. I see the note and bring it to my knees and unfolded it.
All I could do was cry and read over and over:
I see you. I love you.
