Second Treasure
Left there in the darkness with the sole light, time seemed to stop, unsure of how long I curled up next to the light my thoughts wandered. I silently laid down and studied my surrounding, calculating every aspect of the cave, the latch on the cell, recounted the wood beams imbedded among the rocks above me, leading to the chamber that was left open. I was not threaten or comforted by my evaluation of the cavern. My eyes were used to darkness, and after however long the light had been my new companion, I had readjusted to my new dimness.
How long had I been there? This thought initally came unthreatening, yet as the logic invaded my brain, the sharp cut of the question rattled through the cavern. The earth moved around me, shaking everything. The chains echoed around me, yet the candle sat still. My mind froze as I tried to think of the candle, trying to place it. "How did the candle come? Why was I drawn to it? And why was it not shaking in the earthquake that threatened the beams above me?" I heard a loud crack above me and the scream escaped from my stomach, sounding foreign to my ears. I heard my own cry before I felt the breath explode from my lungs. The candle still stayed stationary on the floor that moved underneath it, yet it was not floating, and then I noticed my own arm was motionless among the shaking.
In an instant I was aware of my own motionless body. The sharp difference between the candle, my body, and my dim cavern worsened as I froze, eyes frantically gazing around me I realized the cavern was crumbling and I was unaffected. These earthquakes had happen in the past and I always shook with them but was unharmed. My heart began to panic, I reached out for the candle—this candle changed something. The candle made me stay still, I felt removed from my home. When I touched the candle my heart stopped. The beam on the far wall fell and I was blinded by a bright flash of light. The power of the light knocked me out of my motionless state and threw me against the now motionless wall.
Black.
I awoke sore against the damp, hot earth. My eyes burned in the shaft of light resting on my face. I roughly moved my body out of the shaft of light and allowed my body some rest as I waited for my eyes to adjust. I surveyed the area and stopped at the shaft of light; unsure of the way I felt about the light, I began to look at the beams, walls, and the cell. Everything, except for the far beam on the wall, was unaffected by the shaking last night. I then turned to the candle. It was a new one. Brand new, with a freshly burning wick. I moved towards the candle to observe it closer and then my eyes I found it.
Underneath the moved beam I squinted through the light and something else that was new. It looked like a piece of parchment paper. I crawled underneath the shaft of light and picked up the paper. Unfolding the paper I read the words:
I see you. I love you.
I breathed in deeply; tears fell onto the dirt below me.
I heard a loud crack behind me and threw my body around and saw the light appear. A second candle stood next to the other one, both with newly burning wicks. The second light was a strange warmth and a shade I had never experienced. "Why was it warmer? Why did the second candle soothe me?" I almost glided as I gently walked towards the lights, uneffected by the shaft of light warmingly touching my back as I moved towards the candles. I sat down in front of my two candles, amazed by them. I pushed back thoughts of questioning the second candle’s strange appearance, and sat there cheerfully studying the new treasure, trying to place the shade of the light, clutching tightly the paper in my hand.
The second treasure I found: light of love.
I let the shaft of light warm my chilled body, and time sat still again as I studied the new candle's shape, hue, and smell. I didn’t look once at the walls or my cell, my eyes were transfixed on the dancing of the flames with strange changes of intensity.
